Core and Periphery, Two Types That Make the World

The countries of the world can be divided into two major world regions: the core and the periphery. The core includes major world powers and the countries that contain much of the wealth of the planet. The periphery has those countries that are not reaping the benefits of global wealth and globalization. The Theory of Core and Periphery Many reasons exist as to why this global structure has formed, but generally speaking, there are many barriers, physical and political, that prevent the poorer citizens of the world from participating in global relations. The disparity of wealth between core and periphery countries is staggering. Oxfam noted that 82 percent of the worlds 2017 income went to the richest one percent of people. The Core The top 20 countries ranked by the United Nations Human Development Index are all in the core. However, of note is the slowing, stagnant, and occasionally declining population growth of these countries. The opportunities created by these advantages perpetuate a world driven by individuals in the core. People in positions of power and influence around the world are often brought up or educated in the core (nearly 90 percent of world leaders have a degree from a Western university). The Periphery The population is skyrocketing in the periphery because of a number of contributing factors, including a limited ability to move and the use of children as a means to support a family, among others. Many people living in rural areas perceive opportunities in cities and take action to migrate there, even though there are not enough jobs or housing to support them. About one billion people now live in slum conditions, the UN estimates, and the majority of population growth around the world is occurring in the periphery. The rural-to-urban migration and high birth rates of the periphery are creating both megacities, urban areas with more than eight million people, and hyper cities, urban areas with more than 20 million people. These cities, such as Mexico City or Manila, have slum areas that can contain up to two million people with little infrastructure, rampant crime, no health care, and massive unemployment. Core-Periphery Roots in Colonialism Industrialized nations played a key role in establishing political regimes during postwar reconstruction. English and the Romance languages remain the state languages for many non-European countries long after their foreign colonists have packed up and gone home. This makes it difficult for anyone brought up speaking a local language to assert him or herself in a Eurocentric world. Also, public policy formed by Western ideas may not provide the best solutions for non-Western countries and their problems. Core-Periphery in Conflict Here are some examples of border clashes between nations of the core and the periphery: The growing fence between the U.S. (core) and Mexico (periphery) to prevent the entrance of unauthorized immigrants. The Demilitarized Zone between North and South Korea.Air and naval patrols on the waters between Australia and Southeast Asia and between the EU and North Africa to keep out unwanted immigrants. The UN-enforced border separating the Turkish north and Greek south of Cyprus, known as the Green Line. The core-periphery model is not limited to a global scale, either. Stark contrasts in wages, opportunities, access to health care, and so on among a local or national population are commonplace. The United States, the quintessential beacon for equality, exhibits some of the most obvious examples. U.S. Census Bureau data estimated that the top 20 percent of wage earners made up roughly 51 percent of all U.S. income in 2016, and the top five percent of earners made 22 percent of all U.S. income. For a local perspective, witness the slums of Anacostia, whose impoverished citizens live a stones throw from the grand marble monuments that represent the power and affluence of Washington, D.C.s central downtown. Although the world may be metaphorically shrinking for the minority in the core, the world maintains a rough and limiting geography for the majority in the periphery.

Reconciling Ingrained Traditions with Newly Emerging...

Before the eighth century, England was a pagan society, the English originated from a society marred in idolatry and polytheism. The intermingling of Christian and pagan elements in Beowulf are consistent with the attitudes toward religion that are found in Bede’s Ecclesiastical History of the English People. Beowulf was written in the Middle Ages (500-1000) on Scandinavia, which was a highly pagan society, however the narrator is telling this story within the timeframe of medieval Anglo-Saxon Britain, which was undergoing Christianization. Hence, within the author’s structure of the poem bear a resemblance to the society presented in Bede. Both books while highlighting the intermingling of Christian and pagan elements did not shy away†¦show more content†¦It was under kingship of Ethelbert that the English first converted to Christianity in Bede. Letters from Pope Gregory King Ethelbert highlight the problem of idol worship that persisted in the English socie ty during their first conversion to Christianity. Even those who converted to Christianity such as king Redwald often got â€Å"apostatize(d)† back by their societies, as most people were still ingrained in paganism. For Redwald, it was wife who led him back into pagan practice. After his reversion to pagan practice Redwald tried to â€Å"serve both Christ and the ancient gods, and he had in the same shrine an altar for the holy sacrifice of Christ side by side with a small altar on which victims were offered to devils.† It is such amalgamation of practices that illustrates the intermingling of Christian and pagan elements in both the sources. Areas such as the East Saxons and Essex often lapsed back into paganism. For instance, the East Saxons appostized under king Sigbert and reconverted to Christianity â€Å"by the preaching of Cedd.† Another example is that of the Northumbrians who returned to paganism in 634 C.E after the death of king Edwin. This rev ersion to paganism was evident in Beowulf when Grendel terrorized the Danes, who resultantly turned back to idol worship even though they acknowledge the existence of the Christian God and his power of creation in a song they sang about

Question: Discuss about theCollaborative Style of Working for Teamwork. The article Collaborative overload by Cross, Rebele and Grant, has detailed the issues and solution to the problem of teamwork of an organization. In order to understand the actual idea and opportunities of teamwork method the definition has to be discussed. In some industries like manufacturing, automobile and IT, teamwork is very important as these industries need constant innovation from various aspects. Through this method the managers of the companies motivate the employees to share their own ideas and resources with others so that they aim maintain the flow of knowledge from top to down or horizontally. In increasing production from the employees ends the management have started to motivate the employees for enhancing engagement among themselves and guide others in accomplishing the most difficult tasks. The employees of the organization are trained before they are employed in the core business but in some cases the employees need to learn from their colleagues as it is not always possible to call a meeting or train them for accomplishing a nominal task. These employees then take help from the employees who possess higher resources and knowledge but in most cases, 20% to 35% of value-added collaborations come from only 3% to 5% of employees (Cross, Rebele and Grant 2016). Why collaboration is necessary? This is one of the major aspect to be discussed on. Collaboration among the employees in this current business situation is one of the most pressing necessity yet challenges for the higher authorities of the organizations. This is due to the fact the companies now a days are becoming cross-cultural hence diversity of knowledge and ideas are also growing. In order to get the best of the employees, the managers are encouraging the employees to work collaboratively so that the individual strength are accumulated. In this situation the teams and top talents will stand the costs of high demand for little supply. Collaboration among the teams or the employees is demands of the organization as the managers need to provide needed resources. This will also help the manger to manage the teamwork effectively which will definitely reduce the knowledge gap among the employees and other issues emerging in the organization. According to the authors the need of collaboration is fast increasing which may need for hiring collaboration officers in the near future. What are the problems with associated personal resources? According to this article, there are three types of resources which mainly help the employees to work collaboratively in the organizations. These three are informational, personal and social. These three resources have different facets in which thy work efficiently these resources are the chief elements while creates difference among the experienced and the nonexperience employees. The most precious employees of the organizations possess these resources and constantly increase them in order to create value. The difference in resources determine the efficiency of the employees. All of these resources are nor equally effective. The informational resources are mainly the acquired knowledge as well as skills which can be easily recorded as well as passed on, the social resources capture the awareness, position and the capabilities to access the resources. These two types can be shared among the colleagues as they do not affect the supply but the personal resources which the individual em ployees develop, need effort and time (Cross, Rebele and Grant 2016). Moreover, these resources are not easy to replenish. According to the authors of this article the social and informational resources can be shared without hampering the supply because when the collaborators share their knowledge with others, they keep some the themselves which cannot be done for the personal resources. In addition to this, personal resources are the most unique for which the employees seek help from the collaborates instead of consulting with libraries or other sources these employees seek guidance from the collaborators hence waste time and effort. What are the effects of bottlenecked organizational structure? The study has disclosed the fact that those employees who possess high amount of resources and willing to share them with others, are the most disengaged groups in an organization. Their engagement or statement with their organization become low in compared to those whom they are helping by sharing knowledge. The authors have explored the reason of such behavior and stated that as these employees are very experienced, their production gets disturbed by others seeking for help (Cross, Rebele and Grant 2016). This is the reason, why these top collaborators of the company feel overtaxed and gradually become the bottleneck of the organization. Everyone remain depended on them ad no work can advance without their individual interventions. Unfortunately, the effort of these collaborators which they employ to make others understand or help to complete a complicated task, remain unnoticed. Their talents and diversity remain hidden behind others achievements. Moreover, for collaboration, thes e top collaborators do not get any appreciation or reward hence they feel disengaged with their companies. In addition to this, the study has revealed that the top collaborators of the companies remain disconnected with the personal career satisfaction scores. They are the best sources for information in the organization therefore remain in high demand always. This is the reason why they cannot concentrate on their personal tasks. On the contrary their resources help the companies is diverse ways that make them feel over stressed with no reward. Therefore, these issues ultimate result in high turnover of the most prized employees of the organization (Cross, Rebele and Grant 2016). Due to lack of recognition from the workplace and employees feel frustrated and cannot complete their personal targets easily. Hence they decide to leave the organization and get opportunity to other companies due to their high amount of resources. The top collaborators while leaving their organizations, take more resources and networks with them hence hamper the production of the companies. How redistribution will solve problems? First of all, the employee turnover is a major adversity for the companies. The managers try to retain their employees at any cost but when these top collaborators leave the organizations, this put pressure on the management and their efficiency. Secondly, when the employees leave they affect the resources of the companies as they take valuable data and access to the networks with them. This is the reason why the managers need to take initiatives so that they can maintain the balance of knowledge in one hand and retain more experienced employees in their organization. The authors of this article have analyzed the methods that the mangers can follow to attain this goal. First the managers need to understand the gap between the demand and supply of the resources among the employees. through various technologies like electronic communication tracking and 360-degree feedback as well as the CRM programs, the companies can measure the type, origin and volume or request so that they gain knowledge about the expectations of the employees of the reasons to do a job. They can measure, the information about the time spent in the meetings to get knowledge from the resources and time spent in the solo work. These ideas aim to identify the employees at risk due to collaborative overload. This will effectively help the manager to provide resources where needed thus redistribute the tasks by giving different tasks to the people according to their expertise areas. Secondly, the chief reason of high turnover rate in the organizations is dissatisfaction about the reward and recognition process among the employees. Therefore, the managers must encourage the top collaborators in such a way that they can directly say no to the resources seekers (Cross, Rebele and Grant 2016). They can use team collaboration software which help the employees to build strong barriers around their incoming information flow. The managers need to find out or build perfect replacements for these top collaborators so that when these employees leave the organization, the flow of work remain maintained. Thirdly, reduction of pressure to help others can have positive effect on the productivity of these collaborators. the managers can show methods of filtration and prioritization of the requests so that these people can concentrate on their own tasks. The people thus gain opportunity of the value added activities and through this they will find their work stimulation rather than monotonous. By making social and information resources more available to the employees of the organizations the managers will be able to reduce pressure of the collaborators. There may be a designation where these people will be helping the employees through their resources rather than doing the same tasks. They will act as buffers between the demand or request and supply of knowledge. They will be responding the request immediately when needed thus increase productivity and reduce frustration of not having recognition from the higher authorities. The article has also discussed the issues of collaboration where the women are seen to be the top collaborators in the organizations. They help their colleagues more than the male employees do in the organization. Hence they feel more stressed than others and achieve less. Therefore, it can be said that this article Collaborative overload has discussed the issues of institutional bottleneck and employee turnover in the modern organizations. It has also discussed the ways to be followed by the managers in marinating the smooth flow of work. References: Cross, R., Rebele, R. and Grant, A., 2016. A Tale Of Two Cities Essays (982 words) - English-language Films

A Tale Of Two Cities Throughout the book, A Tale of Two Cities the theme of sacrifice is used to help the reader realize the cost of life, as well as to develop the plot through the effects of those sacrifices. Through the characters of Sydney Carton, Dr. Manette, and Ms. Pross the theme of sacrifice is developed. The theme of sacrifice brings key aspects of the plot together, and Carton's sacrifice brings the novel to closer in the end. Sydney Carton paid the highest cost of sacrifice with his life, and in doing so he was very similar to Jesus Christ. Carton laid down his life for a man who had never done anything for him and who in fact had abused his relationship as demonstrated on page 191 when Carton describes himself in Darnay's view as a dissolute dog who has never done any good, and never will. Similarly Jesus Christ let himself be beaten, abused, and killed for the same people who spit in his face. Other people in both cases thought that Jesus and Carton were not thought to be much more that dogs, while they both sacrificed their lives so these people who treated them like dogs could live. Both Carton's and Jesus' sacrifice was inspired by a deep desperate love for which they were willing to do anything. Carton was willing to die for Lucie because of his desperate, scandalous love for her, just as Jesus showed his love for man when he was willing to give up his life for every man. This level of love makes the sacrifice even more valuable and brings things to closure. Finally, Carton and Jesus both knew that through their sacrifice, others could have life. Carton's death breathed life into Darnay just as Jesus Christ's death breathes life into those who trust in him. The importance of their death is that it brings life. The role of Carton's sacrifice in the plot is that the cost of life is sometimes high. Through his sacrifice the cost and privilege of living can be measured, just as Christians can see the true cost and privilege of life through Jesus Christ's sacrifice. Dr. Manette also sacrificed much of his life by giving up his own personal goals and agenda for Lucie. On page 125 Dr. Manette says, any fancies, any reasons, and apprehensions, anything whatsoever, new or old against the man she really lovedthey shall all be obliterated for her sake. Dr. Manette was willing to relinquish his own personal feelings or perhaps rights so that Lucie may be happy. He set aside, anything whatsoever in order for Lucie to marry the man she loves. Dr. Manette did anything he could to save Darnay from death, even to the point where Madame Defarge mocked him saying, Save him now, my Doctor save him! Dr. Manette had always been suspicious about Darnay, but he put aside his doubts in to Make Lucie happy. Deep down he knew that Darnay was an Evermond?, but he sacrificed his own feelings for Lucie's feelings. Thirdly, Dr. Manette gave up all of his desires, hopes, thoughts of revenge for Lucie, as demonstrated when he says, She is everything to me; more to me than suffering, more to me than wrong, more to me. Dr. Manette had years of anger and revenge stored up him from when he was imprisoned, yet he forgot about all of it and only tried to make Lucie happy and make up for the many years he had lost. Dr. Manette's pain was so great that he often reverts to the insanity that was caused from his imprisonment, while he still does everything he can even though his pain is so great that he can not physically control it. Manette laid down his life so that Lucie could fully live. Ms. Pross sacrificed her life day by day for Lucie to have a better life. Ms. Pross simply devoted her life to Lucie, and her well being which is shown when Mr. Lorry describes Ms. Pross's devotion, there is nothing better in the world than the faithful service of the heart; so rendered and so free from any mercenary taint (87). Pride And Pejudice Essays - Pride And Prejudice, Bennet Family

Pride And Pejudice Essays - Pride And Prejudice, Bennet Family Pride And Pejudice Family Ties In Jane Austen's novel, Pride and Prejudice, she created a realistic family image, by introducing some of the imperfections that many families encounter. The Bennet family, consisting of five daughters, a marriage obsessed mother, and an unhappily married father, contain many of these difficulties. Throughout the love, joy, heartache and pain, which evolved from the series of events the Bennet family encountered, one character in particular, Miss Elizabeth Bennet, viewed her family from another perspective. Elizabeth Bennet, though a very loving and respectable woman, had developed a rather poor opinion of her family: Had Elizabeth's opinion been all drawn from her own family, she could not have formed a very pleasing picture of conjugal felicity or domestic comfort(Pg. 209). As the second daughter of her family, Elizabeth had to deal with the many discomforts of being a daughter of five. Though Elizabeth loved her sisters dearly, she found it difficult not to see the differences between them, and in turn, each of their actions contributed to her perspective of her family. One sister in particular, Miss Lydia Bennet, caused Elizabeth the greatest concern. Lydia was a self-willed and careless(Pg.189) individual that cared only about men and marriage. As one of the youngest sisters, Lydia felt neglected from the opportunities her eldest sisters received. In turn, Lydia became the flirt of the family, causing embarrassment not only to herself, but as well to her family. When Lydia eloped t o London, Elizabeth feared that the source of her behavior was derived from the negative behavior of her parents. Not only did Elizabeth fear for Lydia's sake, she feared as well for her other sister, Catherine, who was under the direct influence of Lydia: Catherine, weak-spirited, irritable, and completely under Lydia's guidance(Pg.189). While supported by their mother's indulgence(Pg.189), the two ignorant, idle, and vain(Pg189) sisters, was a subject that Jane and Elizabeth often united to check the imprudence of Catherine and Lydia.(Pg.189). Besides the poorly thought out actions of Catherine and Lydia, Elizabeth had no problems with her other sister Mary, who mainly kept to herself, and Jane, the eldest sister, whom she shared a very close friendship with. Besides the faults of some of Elizabeth's sisters, one of the biggest faults of their family was the relationship between her father, Mr. Bennet, and her mother, Mrs. Bennet: she had never felt so strongly as now, the disadvantages which must attend the children of so unsuitable a marriage(Pg.210). Though Elizabeth loved her father dearly, she was unable to be blind to the impropriety of her father's behaviour as a husband(Pg.209). Though made up of an odd mixture of quick parts, sarcastic humour, reserve, and caprice(Pg.3), he was a man of few words and was clearly unable to make his wife understand his character(Pg.3). In the decade of the Bennets, marriage was clearly seen through beauty and fortune. It became evident, after resentment had settled in, that Mr. Bennet had married for other reasons besides love: Her father captivated by youth and beauty/ had married a woman whose weak understandings and illiberal mind, had very early in their marriage put an end to all real affectio n for her(Pg.209). Mr. Bennet's poor decision making had indeed hurt Elizabeth and impacted her opinion of her family, but by respecting his abilities(Pg.209), and being grateful for his affectionate treatment of herself(Pg.209), Elizabeth knew that her father was a man of good intentions. Besides the impression Mr. Bennet's faults had on Elizabeth, her mother's faults as well, contributed much to Elizabeth's poor opinion. Mrs. Bennet had not made marriage between her and Mr. Bennet any easier as her ignorance and folly had contributed to his amusement(Pg.3). She was a woman of mean understanding, little information, and uncertain temper(Pg.3). Elizabeth found it difficult to deal with her mother's improper judgement and nervous behaviour. Mrs. Bennet often over exaggerated small incidents and was very demanding in her ways. As a mother of five daughters, it was acceptable for her to be concerned for her daughters' future. But Mrs. Bennet 's entire business of her life was to get her daughters married(Pg.3). Elizabeth loved her mother and was appreciative of her mother's concerns, but Elizabeth was also not blind to her mother's

Behaviour in Organisation Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1500 words

Behaviour in Organisation - Essay Example The change in organizational behavior has been multi-faceted and dynamic and the most defining transformation has taken place in the workplace, pertaining to major components like Globalization, Motivation, Technological developments and Workplace Values and Ethics. These changes have occurred in keeping up with the changing social, political, economic and structural aspect of the society. The paper will now discuss the above stated factors in detail and how they affect behavior of employees. Globalization During the late 1990s, a miracle called Globalization occurred. It led to an â€Å"integration of economies and societies through cross border flow of goods, services, capital, ideas, information, technologies and people† (Mcshane, 2008, p.10) and brought in the free market regime. Globalization had led to an increase in the centralization of control over business organizations and a decentralization of the performance of work. At any rate the exploring and capturing new tra de routes and maintaining control over the territory from the headquarters of one’s kingdom is a practice that was prevalent in older times as well. Globalization has re-established the same process, more effectively by using latest technological advancements. Three main trends have been observed in the development of organizational behavior. Firstly, the scope of business has been internationalized. Organizations have expanded beyond the geographical boundaries of the home countries and assumed the title of ‘Global Capitalist Corporations’. As the small size of the market was a barrier to trade due to inadequacy of demand, spanning of organizations across the globe has proved to be lucrative. For example, Switzerland’s Nestle and the Netherlands’s Heineken have both entered the global arena. Till the last decade, only big organizations could invade selective foreign markets but by the beginning of this century, globalization has aided even small an d medium firms in engage in regular buying and selling in the international market. Secondly, organizations are attempting to apply cost-effective methods of production. Thus, there has been a great emphasis on reducing labor costs. Cheap labor from developing countries of Latin America and Asia are in high demand and the level of outsourcing has risen rapidly. And, finally, exposure to the international markets is making the organizations more competitive as lagging behind in sales and profits are not an option. Chevron and Exxon increased their shares in the international markets to compete with international competitors like BP and Royal Dutch Shell. (Griffin and Moorhead, 2008, 32) All in all the changes brought about by globalization, in organizational behavior has been positive. Technological developments The transformation from industrial to information age has brought about some basic changes in the workplace. There is a need for constant innovation, decentralization of deci sion making process, dejobbing of the labor force (home based business and both temporary/part time and full time jobs), reducing the size of work units, ‘demassification’ (flexible ways of manufacturing and several options), change from â€Å"institutional help to self-help† leading to personality development. A knowledge economy and network based structure has taken the place of bureaucratic

MOCK TRIAL ASSIGNMENT Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1250 words

MOCK TRIAL ASSIGNMENT - Essay Example Several questions must be addressed so that the plaintiff is assured of a fair case in the courts. The background of the jurors is important to note when selecting the potential ones for representation (Walter and James). Firstly, the level of education is of paramount importance. Of pivotal value also is the number of members in the family as well as spouses. This activity of asking such questions tries to investigate any prejudices that may be hidden which could lead to the negation of a fair trial. For instance a jury could have been a victim of such a case in the past hence this aspect may lead to ultimate bias directed towards the defendant thus spoiling the relevance of the case under question. On the other hand, the defendant should likewise exercise caution in the selection of the jury to safeguard the rights bestowed in him. The reason behind such undertaking is to prevent unfair circumstances that hamper administration of justice to the aggrieved parties. For example, the d efendant in this case must ask about the family members of the potential juror since it can be so coincidental that one of the parties to which he has a relationship leads in a certain insurance company and so on. This could pose challenges because the potential juror may sway favoritism towards the defendant hence no instance of justice would be encountered. The jury out to exhibit dire competence at all costs as well as professionalism to the parties, the defendant and the plaintiff. 2.0 Opening Statement for the Defendants As the case before us exhibits, there is a lot of negligence on the part of the plaintiff. From the instructions given by the manufacturer, 1-4B has largely been used in the manufacture products in the household platform yet for it to turn dangerous in its GHB form; large amounts have to be ingested in very high quantities (Andrew). Notably, production of Princess Beads doesn’t use high levels of this element thus this renders the plaintiff’s clai m baseless. Additionally, we expressed our responsibility by giving reliable warning information concerning the product hence the plaintiff negligently dismissed this aspect. To this respect, we can’t be liable for the inconveniences neither the eventual death of the plaintiff’s son, Joey Davis. Specifically, Princess Beads has been positioned strategically in the market to target children of older age than that of Joey; we can never be bound by any law to follow each person purchasing Princess Beads to make sure it’s used appropriately. Thus, it’s my view, that of the entire company that the plaintiff was responsible for the death of her son by not advising the caregivers to adhere to the instructions directed by the manufacturer. They ought to have played their supervisory role in the manner expected to prevent such unfortunate occurrences. If I was a member of the panel of the jury, I would elect an eloquent person to deliver the opening statement. The person should possess a convincing capacity with powerful elaboration skills so as to make sure that the points are delivered to the judges in a sequential and orderly manner which is both convincing and reliable (Hamid). The ultimate efficiency with which the same is done therefore adds value to this case and will hence build a strong defense that in not easy to surpass. By so doing therefore, the foregoing will add bonus points and also give a bearing to the

Conflicts Caused by Differences among Groups Essay Example for Free

Conflicts Caused by Differences among Groups Essay Conflicts Caused by Differences among Groups Throughout history differences among groups have often led to conflict. Two specific conflicts were the persecution of Christians during the Roman Empire and the Armenian massacres. These two conflicts were caused by differences among groups. The persecution of Christians during the Roman Empire was caused by differences in religion. In 1914 the conflict between the Turks and the Armenians led to the Armenian massacre which was caused by political differences. The persecution of Christians during the Roman Empire was caused by differences in religion. The Roman Empire was quite tolerant in its treatment of other religions. The imperial policy was generally one of incorporation; the local gods of a newly conquered area were simply added to the Roman pantheon and often given Roman names. Even the Jews, with their one god, were tolerated. For the Romans, religion was first and foremost a social activity that promoted unity and loyalty to the state, a religious attitude the Romans called pietas, or piety. Cicero wrote that if piety in the Roman sense were to disappear, social unity and justice would perish along with it. The Roman distaste for Christianity then, arose in large part from its sense that it was bad for society. The effect of this conflict was that it led to the persecution of Christians. Secondly, the Armenian massacre was another conflict that happened because of differences among groups. In 1914, the Turks entered World War I on the side of Germany and the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Military leaders began to argue that the Armenians were traitors. If they thought they could win independence the Armenians would be eager to fight for the enemy. As the war intensified Armenians organized volunteer battalions to help the Russian army fight against the Turks in the Caucasus region. These events and general Turkish suspicion of the Armenian people led the Turkish government to push for the removal of the Armenians from the war zones along the Eastern Front. On April 24, 1915, the Armenian genocide began. That day the Turkish government arrested and executed several hundred Armenian intellectuals. After that ordinary Armenians were turned out of their homes and sent on death marches through the Me sopotamian desert without food or water. Frequently, the marchers were stripped naked and forced to walk under the scorching sun until they dropped dead. People who stopped to rest were shot. In conclusion, differences among groups have  often led to conflicts. Two main conflicts were the persecution of Christians during the Roman Empire, which was caused by differences in religion, and the Armenian massacre, which was caused by political differences

Relationships and Mechanical Processes in The Sun Also Rises Essay

Relationships and Mechanical Processes in The Sun Also Rises      Ã‚  Ã‚   Relationships are an important part of life. From general friendships to romantic encounters, almost everyone has had some type of relationship. Sometimes relationships can get confusing, especially when love is involved. Most people, such as Lady Brett Ashley, from The Sun Also Rises, feel that love and sex go hand in hand in a romantic relationship. Although it is apparent that she is in love with Jacob Barnes, the main character, since he is not able to have sex, she does not want to try having any type of romantic relationship with him. "You mustn't [touch her]. You must know. I can't stand it, that's all." (Hemingway, 34).    This idea that one is not able to love another unless there is sex involved leads Brett into many troubles. Since she is not able to have the type of relationship that she wants with Jake, she ends up going after men that are just not worth all the trouble, "she only wanted what she couldn't have."(39). She is in the process of getting a divorce from her husband, a man who has threatened her life on numerous occasions. She is engaged to another man who is habitually drunk and completely bankrupt. She even has affairs with random men that usually understand that it is nothing but a "fling" except for Robert Cohn who "wanted to make an honest woman of her." (205). Her fiancà © seems to be all right with her lifestyle and all the various men when he is sober, but once he has drunk too much it is apparent that her flings mean more to him than he tries to let on. "I gave Brett what for, you know. I said if she would go about with Jews and bull-fighters and such people, she must expect tr ouble." (207). She makes a point of not hidin... ...fe to the fullest without having to worry about relationships and not being able to have one. He understands that he is not able to have or do everything that he wants and so makes up for it by substituting other things that he can do, such as reading, playing tennis, fishing and watching bull-fighting. By having something to concentrate on, Jake does not have to worry about what he is not able to do and so can live his life the best way he knows how.    Works Cited and Consulted: Bardacke, Theodore. The Immense Threat of the Cuban Missile Crisis - 1116 Words

Only since the 1990’s, have we have understood the immense threat that presented itself over the course of two weeks in October of 1962. The Cuban Missile Crisis, which is arguably the closest we have come to nuclear war in our history, was the result of five key entities and events. The five entities and events are the Manhattan Engineering District, Strategic Air Command, Mutually Assured Destruction, the missile gap, and the Bay of Pigs invasion. Without each of these individual components, the Cuban Missile Crisis would never have occurred or been the danger to the world that it was. This paper will examine the role MED played in the development of nuclear weapons, SAC’s presence in promoting a stronger stance on the Soviet Union, and the missile gap that created a situation in which the abundant need for missiles skyrocketed on both sides of the Cold War. It will also examine MAD’s ability to involve the entire Northern hemisphere in nuclear war, and th e Bay of Pigs’ impact on Cuba’s relationship with the Soviet Union. The Manhattan Engineering District or MED, was the organization that created the nuclear bomb. Without this original invention, the Cuban Missile Crisis could never have occurred.
